How do you feel about Hollywood possibly making a Death Note movie?

So they put up this news article about Viz opening offices in Hollywood so they could option their titles for movies. Sounds cool, but they mention a slight possibility of a Death Note movie, along with Dragon Ball for sure.
I just wonder how everyone feels about an americanized Death Note movie... I mean I have seen the Japanese one. I loved it! SOOOO MUCH! But can Hollywood really match that? |

I'm not happy about it. What if they turn them into white Americans?? And the states loves to give people big guns and lots of unnecessary explosives.  |

Actually it was a Canadian company doing the dub of sailor moon, so a good portion of that censorship was our fault. Not all of it though. They did some more censoring specifically for the States.
Yeah I worry that they will move it to a setting in the States, which would basically destroy it for me. |

This is true. The American version of the Ring scared me so much, until I saw the Japanese version, which scared me more. I have been disappointed with the remakes ever since.

It's a mine of new ways of doing ideas they've never done before. Most of the stuff from Japan hasn't been seen here so they can grab it and make it their own and make money off it and it seems fresh to the majority of the unsuspecting public.
There's a show made here in Canada, called Little Mosque on the Prairie, that they have yoinked to remake and broadcast, instead of broadcasting the great, hilarious and wonderful, still going Canadian version. I think it's just what the American media does, disappointing as it can be. |

I know alot of british dramas have been remade. I just recently found out they made an American version of Life on Mars. The moment they try to make an American Doctor Who we are doomed.

Too true! I don't think an american Dr Who would be even vaguely as loved. They just couldn't match up to it.
I think I have heard of Life on Mars, but I am not sure if we get either version of the show here in Canada yet... or maybe I just don't watch the right channel. ^_^ |

That's cool. Death Note isn't for everyone, and a lot of people gave up half way through. I can see why too. I mean I like it, but even though I do the whole thing frustrated me so much! I couldn't stand many of the characters, and only a few did I come close to loving.
K wait... why do I like it... ? o_0 Maybe I like punishment... that's gotta be why I stuck with it... gotta be. >.< |

Yeah. You'd have to have a taste for this kind of story. Me I love seeing the bad guy loose in the end. If they don't I am all frustrated and I can't sleep well for a day or two. So I HAD to see this one through, whether I liked it or not.

Some times it sucks, sometimes I am pleasantly surprised and glad I stuck it through. All depends on the story. ^_^

I'm not a big Death Note fan but I don't see anything wrong with them making a western movie of it. If the movie is good then it may bring more people to the Japanese version and if it is bad then just ignore it.
Personally I'll probably see it and I'll judge if I think it is a good movie on its own without comparing it to the original. Speaking of Western versions of animes I'm REALLY looking forward to Blood: The Last Vampire. I love the original movie and the new one seems like it is going to expand on it! (just so you know I can't stand the Blood+ anime) |

Yeah it can be judged on it's own. I just worry that they will change things in ways that would ruin it. Like setting it in the States. That would mess with the way the police are in the story and thus with the whole dynamic of the story. It would have to be totally re-imagined. The whole thing may become comical, which would not suit it at all.

Well they haven't made it yet. And if/when they do they may change the setting they may not. I would say though that if the people who make the movie like the original that even if they decide to/are forced to change the setting that they could still make something good.
My favorite example is the Silent Hill movie (true SH is set in the US to begin with). The movie has only a basic storyline similarity with the first game and some characters are changed entirely. But I still LOVE it because they got the feel of the games into the movie. |

I am the daughter of Mysteria and best friend of Phynix and Wombat-chan.
I have been drawing and doodling for over 12 years now. That's over half my life... (wow!) I have never taken an actual class but I have read a few books, and many many a tutorial. So I guess that is how I learned what I have learned so far. I do want to go farther with my art. I would like to be a mangaka, or maybe in the art department of a video game company... well anything I can do with my art would be great. But to tell you the truth I have no idea how to get any kind of work with it.
